Bassem Youssef is one of the most recognised satirical voices to come out of Egypt, and his origin story is the kind every creator quietly wants. A practising heart surgeon, he started The B+ Show in 2011 with a webcam in his laundry room. It drew more than five million views in its first three months.

That breakout carried him to television and El Bernameg, the satirical programme he hosted from 2011 to 2014 and the show that turned him into a household name across the Arab world. He has since moved into podcasting with Zeteo. The throughline is the same one that started it: sharp political comedy, made for an Arab audience, that travels far past Cairo.
